The Farrlacey Alpaca Mill opened in October 2005 and is situated in Horncastle in mid Lincolnshire. We are uniquely able to offer a de-hairing service and have 2 modern up to date dehairers. We currently process 7 to 10kg per day on average and our best production runs are about 16kg in one day.
The Mill aims to process alpaca fibre in service to the Alpaca farming community by providing fine yarns, woven goods and products for crafts people including Rovings and Batting.
We are able to deal with any amount of fibre from 1kg to 500kg, quantities of less than 2kg in any one batch do not have a high yield and it is better to blend these fleeces with your others to get 2 kg or save the fleece until the next shearing so you can get a 2 kg batch.
You can rest assured that you will get your own fibre back ensuring that you enjoy your own fine fibre products from your own alpacas. If you wish to send fleece for processing, this should be sent in clear plastic bags, well labelled and sent to us at: Farrlacey Mill, Eastfield Farm, Great Carlton, Louth, Lincs LN11 8JR
Our process involves full systematic dehairing and is a semi-worsted system therefore ensuring that you get the best of the woollen and worsted systems.
We have also launched the British Alpaca Duvet - probably the world's first commercially available 100% Alpaca Duvet and manufactured by us in our Horncastle premises.
Alpaca Fibre is highly prized and selective breeding by the ancient Incas succeeded in achieving extremely fine fibre products, the aim of modern breeding strategies is to reproduce the fineness and density of fleeces which are in demand worldwide.
Alpaca fibre is exceptionally fine, warm and lustrous with a very soft feel (called the handle). The fibre is extremely durable second only in strength to silk and comes in 22 different natural shades and colours.
